Este ano, o Brasil sedia a 20.ª Copa do Mundo da FIFA, atraindo até meio milhão de visitantes internacionais. Os registros das áreas em torno dos nove estádios da Copa do Mundo mostram que a principal temporada da dengue terá passado antes da realização da Copa do Mundo em junho e julho, embora o risco permaneça no nordeste.
Ainda assim, a chegada de multidões de fãs pode aumentar o potencial de transmissão da dengue e os torcedores podem trazer novos genótipos para os quais a imunidade local é baixa.
Foi sugerido que as autoridades brasileiras implementassem um controle vetorial agressivo em abril e maio, especialmente em torno dos estádios na região norte, para diminuir o número de mosquitos transmissores da dengue. No entanto, qualquer que seja o resultado dos jogos, a Copa do Mundo é, no mínimo, uma oportunidade para avaliar a penetração de novos sistemas de informação de saúde pública sobre a dengue, para que possam ser melhorados no futuro e possivelmente aplicados em outros países.

New collaboration with AHF will help stamp out dengue in Latin America
It’s time to put an end to dengue in Latin America too and our new collaboration with the Americas Health Foundation (AHF) will help us get our planned expansion into Latin America under way.
The AHF’s mission is to advance public health in the Americas by working with strategic partners in developing health education, disease prevention, and medical training initiatives. Through the AHF we will be able to connect patients, governments, NGOs, doctors, the pharmaceutical industry, and other stakeholders across Latin America. For instance, its network of local NGOs will help us spread the reach of our initiative in the region.
By expanding our activities – such as raising awareness about dengue and its prevention – into Latin America, we hope to reduce the rising number of cases in the region. The WHO reported over 2.35 million cases and 1,280 deaths in 2013, up from just over 1.12 million cases and 784 deaths in 2012. And the first month of 2014 has already seen 42,309 cases and six deaths.
We know that this collaboration will mirror the success we have had in increasing interest in dengue across India. And we can’t wait to begin working together to combat dengue in Latin America.
