Situated on the Xingu River in the state of Par\u00e1, it was commissioned by the Brazilian government to help guarantee sustainable energy security for the country\u2019s rapidly growing economy.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5606\" style=\"padding: 0px 15px 15px 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/breakdengue.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brasil.jpg\" alt=\"brasil\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakdengue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brasil.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.breakdengue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brasil-161x176.jpg 161w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Brazil\u2019s neighbors, particularly Bolivia, have deep concerns about the health and environmental impact of the dam.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/world\/construction-of-giant-dam-in-brazil-threatens-part-of-amazon-region-a-880735.html\" target=\"_blank\"> Quoted in Germany\u2019s Spiegel Online<\/a>, Bishop Erwin Kr\u00e4utler (the current prelate of the Territorial Prelature of Xingu) believes the dam will cause the Xingu River to flood upstream, flooding the city of Altamira. Vast volumes of standing water would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.towardfreedom.com\/51-global-news-and-analysis\/global-news-and-analysis\/3500-brazilian-dams-accused-of-aggravating-floods-in-bolivia\" target=\"_blank\">lead to a rise in dengue fever<\/a>, among other health risks.<br \/>\nElsewhere in Brazil the recently-completed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jirau_Dam\" target=\"_blank\">Jirau<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santo_Ant%C3%B4nio_Dam\" target=\"_blank\">Santo Ant\u00f4nio<\/a> dams \u2013 situated 50 and 110 miles, respectively, from Brazil\u2019s Bolivian border \u2013 are the first part of a planned four-dam complex. These mega-dams are being blamed for flooding across Bolivia\u2019s Amazonian region this year \u2013 the most disastrous flooding of the past 100 years, <a href=\"http:\/\/nacla.org\/blog\/2014\/3\/31\/are-brazil%E2%80%99s-dams-blame-record-floods-bolivia\" target=\"_blank\">according to the North American Congress on Latin America<\/a> (NACLA). Flooding is so bad that a state of emergency has been declared, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianaid.org.uk\/emergencies\/areas-of-concern\/flooding-in-bolivia.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">reported Christian Aid<\/a>.<br \/>\nNACLA also highlights the strong debate over whether there is any real connection between Brazil\u2019s dams and Bolivia\u2019s flooding. V\u00edctor Paranhos, head of Brazil\u2019s Sustainable Energy Consortium, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2014\/04\/brazilian-dams-accused-aggravating-floods-bolivia\/\" target=\"_blank\">told the Inter Press Service<\/a> that the dams neither caused nor aggravated the flooding in Bolivia. Instead he attributed the floods to recent heavy rainfalls saying, \u201cIt has never rained so much.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"726\" height=\"483\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5604\" src=\"http:\/\/breakdengue.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/177287646.jpg\" alt=\"177287646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakdengue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/177287646.jpg 726w, https:\/\/www.breakdengue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/177287646-265x176.jpg 265w, https:\/\/www.breakdengue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/177287646-508x338.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px\" \/><br \/>\nBolivian President Evo Morales, noted water levels were not dropping as they should have after the heavy rains had subsided and ordered an immediate investigation. The preliminary results, we are led to understand, showed the dams were pushing floodwaters back into Bolivia, instead of flowing out towards the Atlantic Ocean. Further investigations are being carried out.<br \/>\nMega hydroelectric dams are being built as sustainable energy alternatives across Brazil, the Amazon, and other tropical regions.
